Problem fixed: I installed the Windows 2000 Drivers from the disk that
came with the printer. (Do not run the setup, just install the drivers)
There are many ways to setup the drivers, one way is just connect the
printer, it will bring up the add new hardware wizard, choose the
'recommended' option, then choose a 'specific location' and select the
cd drive (ex. E:\), then just choose the HP PhotoSmart 7100 series
option.

At the point of this writing this is the workaround, I did hear from HP
that they are developing Windows 2003-specific drivers. But the
printer works fine with these drivers for now.

Don't bet on Windows 2003 SERVER(?) drivers for the PhotoSmart D7160. Ever.
The printer is intended for either direct use attached to a non-server computer
or on a network shared with other non-server computers. HP is very likely NEVER
to produce drivers for any of its consumer-oriented printers and PSCs attached
to servers. If it were my company, I probably would not spend the money to do
it, either, and I've never obtained phone numbers called under false pretext.

Ben, the drivers for Windows 2003 will be released. I spoke with
someone inside HP while I was working on this problem and they are
currently under development. I also wanted to mention the printer
currently does come with drivers for a Server Operating System: Windows
2000. I did install the drivers in Windows 2000 Advanced Server with
no problems. This means this printer already works in a SERVER
envinronment.

Thanks,
Adiel

This is exceptional, and would represent a change from what HP has customarily
done. A positive change if and when it happens. Seeing is believing. I
would be inclined to believe HP if I saw an official HP development plan on HP
letterhead showing the software development and test schedule. I would really
believe it when I could successfully download and install drivers which would
install on Windows 2003 Server without any subterfuge or workaround.

In the meantime, you have found yet another workaround for the way in which HP
packages its drivers. (Many of us have been doing this sort of thing for
years, utilizing HP devices in an "unsupported" setup to meet business needs.)
To elaborate, the main HP install program cross-checks the version of Windows
running against a list of all the supported software releases. If the version
you are running is not on the list, no install. However, the drivers can often
be installed individually "by hand", which is what you have done. A manual
install of the drivers works because Windows 2003 Server bears a remarkable
architectural similarity to Windows XP. Same with Windows 2000 Server compared
to Windows 2000 Pro.

Gee, I wish Mark Hurd and his people would read this newsgroup rather than snoop
phone records. They would learn useful things about their products and how
customer use them, or want to use them... Ben Myers

Tried to use the Windows 2000 drivers, but had no luck, the printer
does not get reconsigised as a printer and as such the ussual ways of
loading a driver to it fail.

Any suggestions on forceing the USB port to see the attached device as
a Printer?

Thanks
