This is exceptional, and would represent a change from what HP has customarily
done. A positive change if and when it happens. Seeing is believing. I
would be inclined to believe HP if I saw an official HP development plan on HP
letterhead showing the software development and test schedule. I would really
believe it when I could successfully download and install drivers which would
install on Windows 2003 Server without any subterfuge or workaround.
In the meantime, you have found yet another workaround for the way in which HP
packages its drivers. (Many of us have been doing this sort of thing for
years, utilizing HP devices in an "unsupported" setup to meet business needs.)
To elaborate, the main HP install program cross-checks the version of Windows
running against a list of all the supported software releases. If the version
you are running is not on the list, no install. However, the drivers can often
be installed individually "by hand", which is what you have done. A manual
install of the drivers works because Windows 2003 Server bears a remarkable
architectural similarity to Windows XP. Same with Windows 2000 Server compared
to Windows 2000 Pro.
Gee, I wish Mark Hurd and his people would read this newsgroup rather than snoop
phone records. They would learn useful things about their products and how
customer use them, or want to use them... Ben Myers
