According to the HP web site, this computer shipped originally with Windows XP
Home. I am not totally familiar with chipsets used in systems with the Athlon
CPU, but the odds are fairly good that both:
1. Win98SE does not have chipset drivers for the VIA KL 133 motherboard chipset
or the integrated video part of the chipset.
2. One or the other is different enough from the chipsets recognized by Win98SE
that a system hang or BSOD ensues.
Possible solutions to try?
1. Download the VIA KL 133 chipset drivers from the VIA web site, figure out how
to install them in the middle of all the Windows 98 stuff you copied to the hard
drive. Then hope and pray that WIn 98SE hardware detection manages to find this
stuff. Perhaps somebody who knows more about Win 98 installs than I can give
you a more exacting idea of where to put these files. You'll probably need to
attach the 40GB drive to another computer to install the VIA KL 133 drivers if
the download is not a DOS-mode executable program.
2. Obvious solution #1 - install Win 98SE on another computer. Doh!
3. Obvious solution #2 - install WIndows XPee Home or Pro on the XT983. Doh!
4. Potentially workable solution - install Windows 2,000,000 on the XT983.
I doubt that Windows ME would install properly either, but maybe it would.
VIA's web site will provide information about which operating systems are
supported for the KL 133... Ben Myers
