I was at Staples yesterday looking at HP laptops. The one I think I
would go with is the ZE 5570 with a 60 gig HD, 512 DDR Ram, the 15
inch or so screen and all the usual goodies one comes to expect
anymore. I will just be inquisitive here, any users of this model or
anything very similar? The total cost would be around $1,700 with 3
years of extended warranty which in itself is $350. I was also told
the if you buy from Staples, that their own tech support center in
Massachussets would be on the phone with you in perhaps as little as 3
minutes as opposed to the 40 minutes I already had to wait when an HP
laptop at work had a problem. It was no fault of the PC though, just
one of those things that happens sometimes. No way to bootup, someone
at work actually got it up and running. Enough said, any thoughts,
good, bad or otherwise? Thank you to all.

Hi Fox;
I bought the 5570 at Circuit City the end of November for my wife. It
replaced a gateway solo 9300. She loves it. In Dec I bought a second one for
me, replacing a Dell Latitude CSr 500. The second one was DOA out of the
box, but when I returned it to CC, I got a replacement without any problems.
I took the 3yr plan from CCon both laptops. Both laptops cost me around 1200
after rebates. Wife is happy with hers and I'm happy with mine.
I bought from Circuit City because if there is a problem within the first
14days, they will take it back and give you a refund. [no restocking fee
like compusa].
Hope this helps your decision.

Staples will also allow one to return the unit within the inital 14
days after the purchase. So far, sounds like this might be a good
thing. Just wish I could get it for the price you did. Appreciate
the info..

Actually I purchased the ZE4420US which came with a 256 MB Ram ( I
bought 256 more from Circuit City at $45) and a 40 GB HD, it came with
Windows XP Home a whole lot of software like Corel WordPerfect 10 and
photo software and it came with a CDR-R/W DVD burner/drive, for around
$1150.00 of which it came with a $100 rebate which I received in less
than 3 weeks. Total price then dropped to $1050.00 and then I noticed
they are now selling for $900 at Comp Usa and at Circuit City with an
additional rebate. However this is the best part since I have
purchased it the Synpatics Touch Pad crapped out and they HP cannot
seem to figure out how to fix it, it works then it doesn't work etc. I
had a fatal Hard Drive error of Code 10 and the jackasses at HP NO
SUPPORT did not know what that meant and wanted the whole system
mailed back to them at their expense. I explained that the hard drive
weighed around 2-4 ozs. and would be a lot easier to just sent that
back and they could send one to me they would not do that. Go figure.

I did buy a new Toshiba 60GB HD from Drive Solutions for around $140
dollars which is more capacity and the non support folks are still
refusing to take back the broken drive and simply replace it for me.
(Can use it as a back up drive in the future is what I had in mind)
other than that its a nice machine, so you may want to check that out
as well. Remember because I had a problem with the unit does not mean
you would.

Oh and extended warranties are not worth anything since the coverage
is during the first year over lapped and then they place so many
pratfalls in the way many folks never get the units repaired. Waste of
money. If you paid for the unit via American Express they will double
the warranty for up to 2 years so you still get a solid 2 year
warranty from them. If anything goes wrong and the manufacturer does
not fix the units they (Amex) will take it back and replace it. There
are limitations on this but you can read about it at their web site.
Also I believe certain Gold/Platinum Cards from MasterCard and Visa
have the same program.

I just bought a ZE5620 at Office Depot, 512 memory, 60GB drive,
2.8Mhz..801.llg wireless built in. Nice, spent several hours configuring,
installing, etc. Then decided to update the bios..bad idea! Downloaded the
SP27023 update, ran install (by Phoenix Bios)..on step 1 of 8 laptop went
blank, never came back. So beware..

Although I had installed Ghost and imaged it to an external usb HD (I do
this all the time for a couple of desktop units), I had not successfully
gotten Ghost to boot properly from a Sony USB diskette drive yet.

I emailed HP support, they were fairly responsive, had me do a power drain
procedure (disconnect all power and hold down the power button for a while)
but that did not work. So they are sending FedEx to pick it up on Monday.
They say they'll have to flash it manually somehow. Oh, and whatever's on
the hard drive will be wiped. So I'll have to figure out how to Ghost it
back on. Any suggestions?
