HP zx5078 cl Pavilion Needs Memory

I have an HP zx5078 cl Pavilion laptop that came with 512MB of memory.
It runs very slow with the programs I have on it. It has a P4 3.2
CPU, but I think it could really benefit with more memory. My
question is, should I go all the way with 2GB, or just get 1GB?
Running XP Home. Would I really notice much improvement with that
extra 1GB, or should I save the $80 and just get 1GB?

Here is what HP's web site says about memory for the ZX5078:

"Memory 512 MB DDR SDRAM (2 x 256 MB) at 333 MHz
Memory max Maximum Memory 1280 MB DDR SDRAM (1 x 256MB, 1 x 1024 MB)"

I think that answers your question almost perfectly. ALMOST.

One further point, like many laptops, this one MAY have another SDRAM socket
underneath the keyboard, deemed by HP to be something inaccessible to its
customers. If so, you can remove the keyboard and replace the 256MB
underneath. Keyboard removal is a tricky operation only because it involves
tiny screws, flexible breakable plastic and the absence of service documentation
from HP. You still might be able to find a service manual for the zx5078 on the
internet, despite HP's efforts to hide it from the general public.

The other possibility, of course, is that the 256MB is STUPIDLY soldered onto
the system motherboard, in which case the statement by HP's web site is dead
accurate.

There is absolutely nothing in the motherboard chipset to prohibit 2GB of
memory, something quite possible with competing Dell and IBM laptops of the same
vintage I have serviced. Toshiba does the same stupid trick of burying a DIMM
socket under the keyboard.

Go for the 1GB and see what happens... Ben Myers

Thanks Ben. I have also seen apparently conflicting information on
the amount of memory for the zx5000 series laptops. I can't find out
much in the documentation that came with it, but the maintenance and
service manual states that the memory is expandable to 2GB. Crucial
Technology also shows a maximum of 2GB. They are usually dead on with
the information regarding type and amount of memory.

There is one memory stick under the keyboard, and another under a
plate on the bottom of the unit. Both can take a 1MB stick, so it
would appear that the 2GB is correct for a total, but only 1GB is
"user accessible." I think I will buy a 1GB stick and put it in the
bottom slot. That would give me 1.256GB. That should be enough.

Yes, 1.256GB should carry you through the next wave of Microsoft bloatware
updates. And, yes, Crucial can be depended upon to be right. I'm sure that
their test lab has one of everything going back a long way... Ben Myers
