I've seen hubs being sold, as well as switches of similar size (5 port)
but can't differentiate if they are really the same device.

The only way you can be sure if they are hubs or switches is to run performance tests on them. You would need at lest three computers doing large file transfers to see any difference. Considering that the price of switches have been coming down and hubs are becoming obsolete you can probably get a switch for about the same price as a hub.
