My tower has started producing an annoying high pitched humming noise.
Not too big of a deal but its annoying as heck. Does anyone have any
advice as to what might be causing this? (Its not the monitor.) Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I beleive this "humming" noise can be from a fanin your assembly.
There are 4 places whete you can have a fan:

1. Inside the power supply
2. On the CPU
3. On the video card
4. on the cassing assembly itsenf either in front or ou the back.

Try disconnecting sources 2,3 or 4 to see if the noise if made by
one of these sources. If it does replace the according fan.

If the noise comes from the power supply, try cleaning the power
supply using one of those high pressure air spray can to see if that
will clear it. If not change the power supply asap.

>>>Trial and error, best way to diagnose. Pull CPU fan cable from the

mobo just for a second.. Humming stop? Check if you have a graphics
card fan. Also check for possible vibrations by putting a little
pressure on components, including the case, etc. Check all cables
that may be just rubbing against the fan blades of any fans you may
have. Just check every possible thing. If no luck, pull the pic/isa
cards one by one. Sooner or later you'll isolate the problem. Very
few, and I mean very few people can diagnose something on the fly...ya
gotta use trial and error.

Mike .......change .com to dot net

By the way, IT IS A BIG DEAL!!! Today a hm, tomorrow you may smell
smoke! Humming could mean friction, and friction causes heat and,
well...you know the rest.

The computer fans would be a good place to start. However don't
disconnect the fans. In the time it takes for you to turn the power
on see if the humming sound is gone and turn off the system you could
fry the CPU and the video card respectfully. Try using a cardboard
tube or similar item to isolate the sound. One other place to look is
at the harddrive it's bearing might be failing.

Good luck

Sounds like a deteriorating power supply or a bad CPU fan or bad case fan
(least likely.)
