If I have certain stuff on my C: drive that is activated like
Winxp/pro for instance and I image it to external usb drive,
later on I restore the image file, does that retain the original
activation process in tact???

No.

I have an external PATA drive that is connected inside a USB
enclosure. I cloned the C drive using Acronis, and then removed the
PATA drive and replaced my C drive with it. Not only did Win XP
require reactivation, but a couple of programs refused to run without
being reactivated.

I contacted Acronis support and they told me my experience was
typical.

If it's a true image backup and restore, yes. You don't evade anything,
but it's as if you had simply shut the machine off on the date of the
backup and then turned it back on on the date of the restore. IF
something had "expired" in the interim, it will still have expired.

Yes, but you made changes to the system, including changing the hard
drive. The original inquiry described no such changes.

Windows knows what hard drive it's installed on. But a restore to the
same drive should not require a reactivation.

Barry,
Winxp/pro once activated does'nt set any expiration date like the
symantec Nortins anti-virus does. If you go to the "ACTIVATE"
screen it just tells you "Already activated" so am assuming that
would prevail on the image also.

I've restored ghosted images several times and there is no activation
required. The same holds true for cloning to a different drive, I do that
almost weekly and always run off the clone and the 2 drives I use are
different sizes.
