For a long time, ever since the introduction of 802.11b, people have gotten the
highest quality WiFi connections by using PCMCIA (aka PC Card) wireless cards
with provision to attach a Yagi, Cantenna or commercially available external
antenna. I've used both Proxim and Linksys cards with external antennae. You
can still buy "war-driving" kits for notebooks to be used when driving around in
ones car looking for open WiFi access points. One of them has an antenna with
a magnetic base, suitable for attaching to the body of a car.
The miniPCI internal WiFi cards have wire leads to a tiny antenna internal to
the notebook computer, not always adequate for reliable WiFi use.
