Inspiron 2650: fuzzy display

The backlight or backlight inverter of my Dell Inspiron 2650 broke
after the warranty period. The last months it had dimmed continuously,
at the end the display was completely black. The owner of the PC
decided to dismount the screen physically and was supported by a Dell
technician to achieve it. The PC still works well. I connected it to
an external display. But whatever the monitor or projector that is
connected to the PC the rendering is a bit fuzzy. It is as if there
was a shadow on all letters that I type. Sometimes flickering of the
upper left corner of the image. I have reinstalled the Dell driver for
the Nvidia (NX2K4482.EXE) but no change. There are no drivers
available on the Nvidia site for this GeForce2 Go 100. The monitor
setting is set to 96DPI.
I tried different screen resolutions and screen refresh rate with no
difference noticed. The situation is even worse at 75Hz (which is a
supported rate) and where the whole screen flicks continuously.
Is this more a drivers issues or an hardware one such as a bad
grounding? As I am the second owner of the PC I do not know how the
situation was before the screen got disassembled.
Thanks a lot for any advice,
Christophe

Have you checked in Control Panel to see if ClearType is enabled? At it's
highest settings, it will case a dark shadown on fonts.......

And screen flickering would be unrelated however.

ClearType was disabled. I checked with ClearType enabled but the same
issues persist. ClearType just adds a nice regular shadow. I also
noticed that whatever ClearType setting, if I select a portion of
text, the characters instead of appearing plain white over a blue or
black background will appear in white mixed with blue, red, purple
reflects.
Thanks
