Is anyone getting a startup BSOD with their Inspiron?

Mine seems to blue screen on a cold startup (maybe 20% of the time). I
have taken all the normal steps (full diagnostic, re-install Windows,
update drivers, etc.). I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this
problem. It never crashes while operating (which is a good thing, I
guess).

Is there an error message with that blue screen?

I was getting blue screens when my system was in a "test" phase...in
other words, I had a boatload of software installed, and really let the
PC get in a mess. There was a high probability I had some form of
malware. As a result, I dismissed the BSODs as being related to the
state of the PC.

However, after the fresh XP install the problem has persisted. The
latest error (they seem to vary) was about a page fault (writing to a
non-paged area of memory). Error code 0x50. The message didn't
implicate any particular .dll. When I see the BSOD again, I'll see if
the error message changes.

I tried updating my BIOS and updating my drivers (via Dell website),
but the problem persists. Since I cannot reliably reproduce the
problem, I can't test individual drivers (the process could take weeks
given the intermittent BSODs!).

Cheers,
Dave

My new 6400 got an ``executing data'' exception while installing windows
updates, but no BSOD from that, just a complaint about it.

Restarting the update worked okay.

It does suffer from really unimaginable long times to come up, from
whatever the damn virus bloatware is, tying up both processors 100%
for about ten minutes. Maybe next time will be faster.

I'm awaiting shipment (Something tells me that today won't be the delivery day,
as we're under 3 feet of snow, and it's still coming down!) of a 6400 for Mrs.
Notan. I ordered it through the Small Business Division, with none of the software
options selected.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Dell doesn't try to add the extras, anyway.

Correction: "I'm awaiting delivery..."

Yesterday, I got two blue screens, two black screens (blank), and one
black screen with some information. After this happens, a subsequent
boot takes a long-ish time (maybe 2 minutes on the Dell startup screen)

The last blue screen implicated Win32k.sys, and checking my event log
showed some warnings related to this (all with respect to power modes).
So I'm thinking the problem is with power management, not with a
bad/corrupt Windows installation.

Other than that, this is a *fine* machine. Once it's running, it's
fantastic! A love/hate relationship.
