a friend of mine asked me to help them load windows onto their new imac.
i have never done it before so was wondering if someone could point me
in the right direction how to do this?

does he need to buy a new license for windows? or can he use something
he already has, or is that bundled with programs like bootcamp.

what is the best way to accomplish this?

thanks for your help.

You will find the details you need on the sites below:

Two ways:
Select OS at boot time with BootCamp:
<http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/>

Run Mac OS and Windows simultaneously (with a small speed penalty, esp.
for games and 3D-using apps), use Parallels:

Some information can be found at the Apple web site, a good starting
point is this page:

He needs Windows XP with Service Pack 2. He may have to upgrade the
computer's ROM. Full instructions are here:

Um... I own Parallels and think it is a great product, well worth what I
paid for it. Recommended.

However, it is a gross understatement to say that it has a small speed
penalty for games and 3-D using apps. It does not run apps that require
3-D acceleration (specifically, ones that use direct-X) *AT ALL*. Please
do not mislead people into thinking otherwise. That will give them
unrealistic expectations, which lead to dissapointment. It happens often
enough already, without the encouragement of such misstatements.

I have 2 separate Windows installations on my iMac - one using Boot Camp
for the games that need it, and another using Parallels for everything
else that I do in Windows (most notably in my case, Quicken).

VirtualPC does not work on an Intel iMac.

an existing sp2 cd that he has. his old windows based computer crashed
so he bought this imac instead. he was hoping to use his old xpsp2 cd.

If it is a full copy of the installer, complete with SP2 on the same
disk, and is not an OEM version, he can use it. If it is an OEM
version, then it probably can be used only with the brand (and maybe
only with the model) of computer that it came with. This is not a
limitation of Boot Camp, but of Windows itself.

However, I believe that Microsoft's license has some restrictions
concerning installation.
