Well I got my dell to boot from the Win2000 cd. But now it's telling
me to put a disc in drive A. That's my floppy drive. I thought I was
able to boot straight from the cd-rom. What do I need to do?

To be more specific, it asks me to insert the disc labeled "Windows
2000 Pro CD R" into drive A.. which is a floppy drive. Please advise

Go into your BIOS and change it so it boots from the CD first

If the OP did not either wipe the drive clean with DBAN or wipe out the
partition table, he will continue to have problems simply because Windows XP
intervenes and messes things up. There is no reason why a 3-year old Dell
cannot handle Windows 2000, assuming that the OP has also downloaded the Windows
2000 drivers for his system from either the Dell web site or the chipset
manufacturer's web site. That may be a BIG assumption.

I would feel 1000% better responding to his problem if he would acknowledge
advice given in previous posts AND tell is which model he is messing with.

"Three-year old" could cover systems with the Intel 900-series chipset and some
sort of graphics chip for which drivers are not available for Windows 2000.

Before making any further responses to , let's let him tell us
the Dell model and maybe even the Dell service tag. Let's hope he has looked
for Windows 2000 drivers before he has leaped... Ben Myers

I have no idea what the specific model is. Would that really matter?
After booting from cd when the Win 2000 setup screen comes on, it
tells me to put the Windows CD Rom into drive A, which is a floppy
drive. I switched the boot sequence so that it boots from the CD ROM
normally (as per WSZsr's advice), but still the same problem. Nothing
has been formatted or changed yet, as I can't get past this screen on
the Win2000 setup.

In WinXP, select control panel, then performance & maintenance,
then the "tell me about my system" option. It will tell you
what model you have, and, in the additional information tab, your
service codes.

Yes. It would help knowledgeable people here give you
knowledgeable help and directions to where to find additional
information on this computer that you seem to know nothing about.

Yes, the model is VERY important. The Dell web site does not have any Windows
2000 drivers for the Dimension 4600. That's pretty important. Without Windows
2000 drivers, the Dimension 4600 would totally suck running Win 2000!

For that motherboard, what you need are Windows 2000 drivers for the Intel 865
motherboard chipset, Intel 865G Extreme graphics, Analog Devices ADI198x audio,
Intel Pro 10/100 Ethernet. You can download these drivers from the web page
for the D865GBF on the Intel web site, and burn them onto a CD for use after you
install Windows 2000 from the Windows 2000 CD. In addition, if your model of
4600 has a freestanding video card, a freestanding audio card, and/or a modem
card, you will need Win 2000 drivers for these as well.

Now let's get back to the problem that seems to have you chasing your tail. From
what you've described, it seems like Windows XP is still running on your
Dimension 4600. Until you have removed XP from the computer's hard drive, you
will continue to be unsuccessful getting Windows 2000 to install. Your other
choice is to go to Best Buy or Circuit City or wherever, and buy a new PATA/IDE
drive, replacing the one in your system. Then, Windows 2000 will install.
Trust me on that... Ben Myers
