I bought a number off non-Dell supplied readers but they have a 5 pin flat
connector. The 9150 and other Dells have a 9 or 10 pin socket. Is there an
inexpensive adapter? This is for internal USB. Thanks.

A typical 10-pin USB socket on a MB is basically 2 rows of 5-pins, each
5-pin row is 1 USB port.

The 5-pin connector will just plug into the 5-pins on either 'side' of the
10-pin connector. When it doubt, plug it into the 5-pin side that has all 5
pins.

post the link of what you bought.
my experience has only been with the dell internal reader, which isn't
that expensive. i dont recall the part number, but perhaps someone else
here knows it.
or you can just call them... Dell spare parts: 1-800-357-3355

You need to check the pinout of the connector, but most likely you will
put the 5-pin plug (or perhaps only 4 of the 5 pins) on one side of the
9/10 pin header. The 9/10 pin header is a dual header (2 USB ports),
and the reader needs only one. Most likely, you can put it on either
side (the 5th pin is an extra ground and isn't needed), but before doing
that you need to check that the connector is correctly pinned for the
motherboard header socket. It's probably right, but not guaranteed.

Unfortunately, the 5 pin connector is too long for the 5 pin side of the
Dell motherboard socket. There are only 4 wires in the 5 pin connector. I
tried removing the 4 wires from the shell and plugging them directly into
the Dell socket, but the metal "plugs" were very loose and would not stay on
Dell's pins.
