from two 256MB to two 512MB Kingston Value RAM DDR 3200 CL3 (its max my
mother board will handle), but wow! System booted up at 286MB RAM in use,
now is at 312MB used. Programs start up so much faster.

I just went from two 256 MB PC2700 to two 1 GB PC3200.
Doesn't boot as fast, it takes longer for the RAM to test
and I also added a 7 port USB hub and leave my card reader
installed.

But the computer handles files so much better, it doesn't
use the page file at all for most task, including having IE
open in several windows and multiple tabs.

I have not timed video rendering, but it should be lots
faster.

I built mine in Sept 2002, using an Intel D845GBVL [478
socket] and a 1.7 GHz Celeron.
I started with just one 256 MB RAM and a CD-RW drive and an
80 GB hard drive. Money was tight.

Since then I've added a DVD DL RW drive, gone to 2 GB RAM.
I'm still using the Intel built-in graphics and am looking
at the price of a P4 chip.

I also have a new 250 GB drive and will be reinstalling the
OS and getting setup again with a clean install. The 80 GB
drive will become my back-up and swap drive.

My next computer will likely be an Intel 775 and a dual or
quad core, if I get a video camera and start doing some
editing.

Jim, on at least some bios's you can disable the ram test if you want.
I know on my 9200 bios, you can do this tho I chose like you to let it
be (not that big of a difference and I've got 2 gigs ram on it
presently).

I love my video editing too. I won't be going Intel on the next motherboard,
even when I had a 1.6Ghz in this thing it was so much faster than my
Inspiron 5160 with its 2.32blah blah pointless number of power with the same
amount of RAM.
