k7s5a. forgot cpu fan, now what?

i'm old, forgive me. my son mailed me the old board with duron inserted. i
installed it in a new case and so forth. got in a hurry and just couldn't
wait to see if case worked after installing power button lead to board,
forgetting i didn't have the cpu fan. the new case and p/s started fine, but
shut down Immediately.
now, 2 weeks later, i've got all my parts,less memory. set up the cpu
coolermaster and when i plugged case into a/c, the cpu fan stutters for a
brief second, and stops. the case power supply doesn't even seem to start.
is there a fuse i could check? is the duron toast? how can i check?

Your Duron is most likely toast. Only way to tell is to fit another CPU (&
HSF!), RAM, video and check.

I did this once with an old K62 500. Couldn't get Windows to install,
constant lockups. Soon found out why! And guess what? The CPU lived to tell
the tale. But you may not be so lucky with the Duron...............

Most likely toast :/
Yep.They can,"Super-heat" that fast and unlike some better boards they
don't have a CPU fan detection to stop users doing this.Sorry :/
Good news is Durons are pretty cheap now

shep: first off thanks for the prompt reply. it was just 5 seconds or so on.
the case was not hooked up to monitor or anything with no os yet installed.
i touched (like a fool) the back of the duron after p/s shut down: it was
very very hot. i'm thinking your right. but i had already ordered a stick of
512 pc 2100 kingston. i may drive to portland and get a new combo athlon
offer. i guess the stick of 2100 will work in a newer elite board. i don't
have to use the ddr 3200 or 2700 i presume. (p.s.: grandma and i still use
the fic 503+ and k6 2 350)

This board only supports officially up to PC2100 ram anyway

Oops. I once accidentally powered one up before the heatsink was firmly
attached, and can tell you from experience that it takes less than a
second to fry the CPU.

Happily, Durons are pretty cheap now. They weren't when I did it.

thanks pj. were at VA in portland on 1/13 and will pick up whatever is on
sale. i'll check "oregonian" today and this weekend. your thoughtful.
Shep indicated boards that can read heat in cpu and then shut down if
overheated. that's nice. when i get the new combo and my coolermaster
(copper core/rheostat sp for fan) running i'll report back.

My old ECS K7S5A died a while back(my fault-ish) and I'm not using an
Asrock k7s8xe
Re-badged Asus board.This has a,"No CPU fan" detection as do the very
cheap JetWay V266b boards.However I had to return one locally as it
had a faulty BIOS but the two I've used recently for builds also have
the above protection and thermal shutdown protection.
Even the Asrock I use had to be returned(bought locally though) and it
had a faulty PCI slot so even more expensive boards still have crap
Q/C but once I got a good one it's boringly stable.nothing to do to it
really<grin>.But with me that won't last<BFG>
