My old ECS K7S5A died a while back(my fault-ish) and I'm now using an
Asrock k7s8xe
Re-badged Asus board. This has a,"No CPU fan" detection as do the very
cheap JetWay V266b boards. However I had to return one locally as it
had a faulty BIOS but the two I've used recently for builds also have
the above protection and thermal shutdown protection.
Even the Asrock I use had to be returned(bought locally though) and it
had a faulty PCI slot so even more expensive boards still have crap
Q/C but once I got a good one it's boringly stable.nothing to do to it
really<grin>.But with me that won't last<BFG>

I have moved on to these Syntax SV266A boards from E Buyer at about £17 ish.
Very stable but not for novice builders, the setup CD is a nightmare and the
autosetup routine installs the wrong sound drivers! And guess what? No lost
CMOS problems, not power supply fussy and doesn't mind 2 sticks of SDRAM.
Not sure about no CPU fan protection though, but there are configurable CPU
temp. options in the BIOS.

I was surprised that the K7S5A didn't have a temperature alarm or
shutdown system built into its BIOS, so I resorted to a hardware
solution like a bimetal thermostatic switch attached to the heatsink
and shorts the power button wires when the CPU reaches about 60C. If
you install this, first test its trigger temperature because some
don't trigger until more than 10C hotter. I instead used a thermistor
and an electronic circuit because I had the parts for it and it's
easier to change the setting to allow testing at lower temperatures,
unlike the case with a bimetal switch.

That $40 Fry's ECS K7VTA3 mobo/1.6 GHz Duron that PJx mentioned does
have a high-temperature shutdown feature in its BIOS, selectable for
65-70C. But I don't have the guts to verify that it works.

I've fitted a couple of Jetway v266b boards.Again one had to be
returned but the two good ones were a doddle to setup.Very slick with
Sdram using the RAM 4-way interleaving
