Hi Everyone,

Does anyone know why my machine with the subject mobo will not boot when I
install a USB 2.0 5-port PCI card (SIIG Model US2245)? I tried 4 slots with
no luck. Also, the card works in a machine with a K7S5A Pro mobo and one
with an Asus P2B.

When I try to turn on the machine with the subject mobo and the USB card
installed, I get rapid short beeps and the monitor light never turns green.
Remove the card and it boots perfectly.

XP 2400+
512 MB Crucial PC2100 DDR
Win98 SE

TIA,
HarvB

What power supply is in the system?

Hi Shep,

Thanks for responding. The PS is a generic 320 Watt unit that I purchased
along with an ATX midtower case from Thompson's Computer Warehouse about 2
years ago. I think I see where you're going, so here's a list of the other
components:

CD
CD-RW
80 Gb HD
20 Gb HD
FD
GeForce4 MX440 AGP
Sound Blaster Live audio card in Slot #4
External Zip Drive (parallel port)
External Modem (serial port)
4 USB 1.1 devices (scanner, printer, joystick, camera)

No other PCI cards are present.

The G4 cards require more current than the older cards.I suspect(as
you now do) that the PS is not up to it :/

PS
If the video card is out of warranty you can use the old trick of
powering it's fan off the power supply direct instead of off the video
board. This reduces the current draw on the mother board

I have had issues with some PCI cards. I ended up getting a bios update,
and it worked great after that.

Thanks for your reply Brian. I updated my BIOS recently to provide support
for an XP 2400+ with version 02/08/09. There are a couple of newer versions.
02/10/01 is to adjust timing for stability and compatibility and a newer one
is specifically for a certain video card. I don't think either of them would
solve my problem. I plan on trying a larger PS as suggested by Shep. Will
report results to the group.

Will try another power supply. Regarding the GF4 card, mine does not have a
fan, but has a large heat sink.
Thanks again Shep.
