I am getting ready to upgrade the memory in my computer that is a year
old from 128meg sdram to 1GB using Crucial ddr pc2100 with 2 512MB
module's. I was thinking about upgrading the processer to a faster one
than the duron 1.3 that came woth it and I was wondering how fast of
one I could install in it. I was also wondering if I would have to
upgrade the bios if I did upgrade the processor. The board is the
K7S5A ver 1.0 with the sis735 chipset.
Thanks much,
Bob

The 1.3 Duron works nicely with this board, but you could install up to a
XP2600 (266 mhz, Palamino or Thorobred). You will probably need to upgrade
the BIOS for the faster processor to work (but it will depend on your
current BIOS version) and you will need to set the system to 133/133 to get
full speed. The new Durons are cut down Palaminos, running at 266 mhz. and
up to 1800 mhz. You should be aware that there is a possibility that you
will also need to upgrade your PSU. You will need a UDMA 100 HDD to avoid a
performance bottleneck, if you do not already have one.

Frankly, in your position, I would keep the setup as it is and put the cash
to a new system based on 333 mhz for the future.

If mainframe Cobol I think kermit works but depending on hw TCP/IP may
work.
