k7s5a won't boot

Was working fine 2 days ago, now it won't boot. It powers up, but I get no
beep. Then it flashes the HDD, DVD and CD lights alternately.

No video signal. I swapped video cards with a known working one, still
nothing.

No boot with a boot CD.

Nothing but fans.

What's the problem? PSU or mobo?

Thanks,
TFM®

Could be either, among other things. Swap out the power
supply, reset the bios with the cmos jumper and see what
happens.

Before swapping out anything, try reseating everything - especially PCI, AGP
and RAM (possibly CPU). I would then go to a minimal configuration - mobo,
cpu, ram, then add video card if I get a "no video beep" from bios. If you
are getting fans, hdd, dvd and cd lights, it's probably not the PSU,
although double check your connector from PSU to mobo - and of course,
disconnect the power before touching anything and remember to keep yourself
grounded during the process. If a minimal configuration does boot up, then
it's time to add components one at a time until you get what you want.
Hmm... I'd also make sure the monitor is working correctly - I just had a
monitor go on me (I suspect I overdrove the poor old beast while playing
around with resolutions for my CRT projector).

Good luck, man, and keep us posted

I'll keep you posted, but I'm pretty sure it's the mobo right now. It's not
my computer, but I will end up fixing it, and it's owner is kinda like my
step-father, so I have a vested interest in it's well being. <G>

You stated above to disconnect the power before touching anything, then you
stated I should keep myself grounded.

In actuality, the case is grounded *only* when it's plugged into the wall.
I *never* work on one unless the PSU is plugged in. This gives you the
ground neccesary. Simply touch the metal case before touching *anything*
inside, and you're 100% discharged.

If you can argue with that, you are arguing with logic itself.

Ran into a similar problem when I tried upgrading my K7S5A from a Duron 1.1
to an XP 2000. Much the same symptoms as yours. Took the board out, ordered
an L7S7A2 and moved on. After much reading, I removed the CMOS battery from
the motherboard and let it sit for a while. After a goodly amount of time,
popped the battery back in and installed a Durnon 750 I had lying around and
it came back to life. It continues to work to this day.

YMMV

Me too. CPU is OK, PSU is OK. Try a mobo flash.
