k7som+ problems getting anything to work

I was helping a friend of mine install a new system with a k7som+
motherboard and am having major problems.
Initially I couldn't get it to power up at all but realized that the reset
cmos jumper was enabled. I switched that back to the normal position and it
powered up just fine but there was no beeping from the speaker and no video.
The harddrives and CD-ROMs all spun up just fine. So I thought, well maybe
I have something in wrong, so I disconected everything except the PC
speaker, the power switch and the monitor. Still nothing. So I thought
well maybe it's a faulty memory chip. I replaced it with a known working
one (both 256 meg DDR). and still nothing. I was gonna swap out the
processor, but it's soldered onto the mobo, so I can't try that. I am
pretty much out of ideas. If I had an extra PCI video card to throw on I
would try that (The video card is built onto the mobo). But I have a
feeling that won't work either because I am not even getting the typical
beep that you get when turning on a computer.

Could there be something dumb that I am over looking like a jumper setting
or something like that? Or could it just be a DOA board?

thanks, you guys rock!

Curious about the CMOS jumper being enabled. Are you sure the board is new?

Try reset CMOS with PSU unplugged. Go into BIOS - Hardware Monitor and
watch the CPU temp to see if it climbs. I've had several of these boards
where the CPU temp climbs and nothing can be done with it except RMA.

What version of board? 5.xx or 7.xx sticker on board near RAM slots; also:
3 PCI is 5.xx vs 2 PCI slots is 7.xx

Might be a BIOS upgrade available:
http://www.ecsusa.com/downloads/bios.html

Whatever model you got, they work really good once you get them going.

The board is new, I switched the jumper because I misread the manual, then
switched it back to how it should be.

I will try reseting the CMOS with the PSU unplugged, although I am pretty
sure I tried it already. Also if I _could_ get into the BIOS, I would check
those things, but like I said, I can't even get a video signal.

Board version is 7.5c 2PCI slots

Do you know if it's possible to update the bios without getting video?

I was hoping the CMOS reset would give you video display. I know of know
way of flashing without video signal.

You might try another monitor.

Personally, I would send it back.

If you haven't done so already, take the motherboard out of the case and
place it on an insulated surface. Then try it with only video card and ram
(cpu is onboard so it is already installed) and see if it POSTs. If nothing
then motherboard may be faulty but try another PSU before giving up.

That's actually exactly what I was gonna try next.
I will let you all know what happens.
btw video card is already on the mobo, so really all i need is the ram.

Just a follow up to everything,
I reset the cmos jumper and even pulled out the battery to make sure it
couldn't possibly keep anything. and still it wouldn't post. All I was able
to get is the CPU fan to power up and whatever drives I had connected.
Well, I guess it's time to contact ECS and let them know.

BTW, has anyone delt with them for returning defective merchandise? How are
they to deal with.
thanks for all the help

Have you tried a PCI video card?

re: board return/exchanges:
I got my boards from Shentech. Only once I had a problem after the 30-day
return option and they asked me to deal with ECS. The ECS website says they
will only RMA with those who have ECS invoice. To me, that means the
dealers because ECS doesn't sell boards direct to my knowledge. I called
back to Shentech and they finally replaced the board but I had to wait
longer.

"ECS RETURN (RMA) POLICY * ECS Warranty is offered to direct customers with
valid ECS invoice only.

I was going to, but I don't have any extra that I can try.
even still, if the built in video card doesn't work, the mobo is defective.

Your defective-board point is of course valid. I like to determine as much
information as possible if only for peace-of-mind. PCI video cards are very
cheap these days and in most cases, they can be returned. I have several
just for test purposes.
