My CPU is a Dell E510 Media Player. After many problems with Dell and a new
Dimension 4700 they sent me this refurbished one last May.

I recently purchased a Microsoft Media Pro USB keyboard which is USB . I
also have a Logitech MX1000 wireless mouse that uses it's own software.
Needed a USB keyboard since the wireless Logitech keyboard I had conflicted
with the mouse and I "love" the mouse and also having a wired keyboard was
not a major issue..

When I startup or restart, just at the "end" of the Dell logo boot but prior
to entering the Windows boot, I get a beeping sound on the CPU ( sound is
like a post error sound). If I hit escape it stops and then loads Windows
normally. I called Dell and will probably be calling them back, however ,
when I did get a Dell tech who referred me to Microsoft who said " Dell
should have helped you with that" He could not. The keyboard works if I plug
it into my notebook so it is not a hardware defect. Also the real crummy
dell usb keyboard I got works fine, just not a comfortable keyboard at all..
I really like this Microsoft keyboard or I would have tried to return it.
Another possibility, since the CPU is a Media Player model, can the media
factors on the keyboard conflict.. I did try using the keyboard WITHOUT the
software tho and it still beeps?

It's not a major problem, but very annoying. I have tried uninstalling my
mouse and just installing the keyboard software but it still beeps. From
what I can conclude, something is loading just prior to the keyboard and
just before Windows loads that is causing this. I have also played with the
msconfig etc. Nothing.

I will probably be reformatting in the near future but wasn't ready to right
now ( been ill lately). What I am also wondering, when I do reformat, does
it create a new Boot sequence whereby the problem "might" go away. For now,
I store the computer in standby unless I have to restart for some other
reason. Hope I didn't leave anything out

Any suggestions J

Carmen

you probably have something loading at startup that is complaining.
run hijackthis.exe and post the startup log and perhaps someone can see
what the problem is. i would bet that is the problem and removing all
the other old keyboard and mouse driver/programs would help.

a fresh install would also work, but shouldnt be necessary.

<snip>

I think the OP is referring to the entire tower as her CPU, which is not
entirely uncommon.

guess what. I ended up reformatting. After the first CD to reinstall
windows, as soon as it got to the verry end of the "Dell Boot" the beeping
started again, however the beeping is coming from the CPU and not the
keyboard. Haven't even reloaded the nxt CD with the drivers on it and the
App CD yet. Really has me puzzeled. I can live with the beeping if I have
to but am concerned that if I am away from the house and the power goes out,
the machine will just keep beeping until someone physicallly hits esc or any
ke for that matter. Still love the keyboard tho Is there a wa I can
program the machine that if the power goes out it will not restart on its
own . Maybe it doesnt go on. I'm not sure, haven't had a power outage yet

Such a "stupid" problem to pursue I know.

Thanks for any and all replies.

the bios setup should have a place for the power on restart options.

it could be a faulty keyboard.
