Keyboard problems on Inspiron 5150.

Either nothing happens or the keys are completely random.

Sometimes rebooting would temporarily fix it, but no longer.

Sometimes there's the following message on reboot:

Keyboard clockline failure
Keyboard controller failure

Any help most appreciated.

Could be a loose or failed keyboard, or could be the actual controller on
the systemboard has gone bad.

Start with the easy stuff first. Remove the keyboard and re-seat its
connector to the systemboard and see if there is a change:
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...rd.htm#1084976

If not, then you might want to call Dell spare parts and buy a replacement
keyboard (should be less than $30 as a guess): 1-800-357-3355. (These can be
found on ebay as well, but generally not for much less.)

If that doesn't work then you're likely looking at a systemboard
replacement, and you won't want to know what Dell's price is on that other
than for reference only.

I'd then have a look on ebay. Systemboard replacement instructions:
http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...rb.htm#1084976 .

Good luck -

Stew

Go to the Dell web site, enter in the service tag and find out how much warranty
the system has. Surprise! A pleasant one. As a settlement in a class action
lawsuit about 5150 problems, Dell extended the warranty on the Inspiron 5150,
usually until the end of September 2007. The settlement covers only the 5150,
but not the very similar 5100, 5160, and 1150, all of which share the same
chassis, many parts, and have similar motherboards.

Now call Dell and ask them to repair the system. They will ask you to remove
the hard drive (a couple of screws), and send the system back to them in a
prepaid DHL carton which will be dropped off for you. The system ought to
return fully repaired in no more than 72 hours.

I had a broken 5150 repaired myself about three months ago. I paid short money
for it to a company that simply wanted it gone.

Good luck... Ben Myers

Thanks, Ben. And you too Stew.

It's my son's computer and naturally, because of the keyboard
problems, he couldn't post himself! All he could do was click. But, I
needed something worthwhile to do at work anyway...
