Who knows about the Tecra 8000 video?

On my Tecra 8000 I was trying to set up a dual screen system with the 2nd
screen being the video out. I never got there and during all the changes I
manged to somehow "lose" the NeoMagic tab on the Advanced settings page of
the Display settings. It's just gone! It's the tab where you can select
LCD/TV and has a picture of the LCD monitor, a CRT, and a TV. So now I can't
even set anything to go out on the video. Ideas on how to get it back or to
set up the dual screen with video as the 2nd screen?

Well, yeah I tried that, only about 2 dozen times. I've also dowloaded the
latest 98 drivers from Toshiba. That tab is still gone. This prevents me
from going into the dual screen mode. I have set the dual screen option in
the Toshiba Tools program (in the Control Panel screen) but it seems to have
no effect.

Okay, here is where I am on this problem:

Toshiba Tecra 8000 running Win 98
Latest video driver (V4.11.01.5207-Q2.07.0.04) installed
Latest NeoMagic 32-bit Video Port Manager installed
(V.9.0.98.0611)
Both from the Toshiba website.

BIOS set to dual display. I found out that the Toshiba Tools is a user
interface for setting the BIOS.

On a fresh boot, the Display/Settings shows only one monitor, not 2 as
should be seen for dual display. Clinking on the advanced tab there is still
no NeoMagic tab.

I have Googled about every combination I can think of and found nothing of
value. Toshiba wants $$ for an answer and their website is useless with no
chat or Email support.

I did find, on the German Toshiba website an answer to someone else who had
the NeoMagic tab disappear, however it was on another model Toshiba. Their
answer was to change a registery key from A to B or C (I can remember the
name of the key.) I had the same key in my machine but the changes did
nothing. Wow, this is a tough one!

Here are my thoughts!

1) The monitor has to be plugged in (and probably turned on) for Windows
to even know it is there.

2) With both turned on in the BIOS, you should see the post screen on
both screens. Although once Windows boots up, Windows will override
those BIOS settings until you reboot once again. Do you see this?

3) I know nothing of NeoMagic, but it should be listed in the Control
Panel, Device Manager, and possibly in the tray of the Taskbar. And it
should also be listed as running in the Task Manager. Maybe one of them
has a disabled feature. Well not the latter one of course.

Tell us what isn't happening and what is from the above.

I had tried all that you mentioned. With both 1 and 2 I could see the
external monitor function, but I never had dual screens. I only had 1 screen
that I could throw back and forth from the LCD to the external VGA with
Fn-F5. NeoMagic is listed no where I could see and I have looked in every
screen I could think of. I only see it in the driver listings and in the
NeoMagic tab that was missing. I said WAS missing because I FOUND IT!!!!
Although I don't know why.

By disabling the Panning.sys call in the config.sys, then rebooting, the
NeoMagic tab reappeared! I then clicked the checkbox for the LCD/CRT option,
which is on the newly reappeared NeoMagic tab screen, and poof, I have dual
screen capability again! Some Google searches on Panning.sys show references
to trouble it causes in Toshiba machines. Most say to disable it. It is
interesting to note that even disabled, I still have have the ability to pan
the screen when the resolution exceeds the screens ability. Anyone else seen
trouble with the Panning.sys file? I still don't know how I got into this
problem in the first place. I know I didn't mess with the config.sys file.
Wow, what a pain to troubleshoot! I did learn that Toshiba has support
issues. Couldn't say I would recommend them to anyone.

Oh good deal Ted!

Oh yeah... that dang panning.sys file in the config.sys file. Some
software when you install will modify this file (among other files). So
maybe that is what has happened. I think that panning.sys file is only
useful for DOS programs anyway (although I can't swear to it). Anyway I
am so glad you got things working once again. And you have updated us.
You're the greatest Ted! Thanks again.
