After reading all the angst over USB 2.0 'way back,
I was feeling smug about the fact that mine just
worked.
Lesson 1: don't get smug.
I got a nice new Epson 3170 scanner and plugged it
in. It connected...BA-BUMP...then either complained
that a high speed device was on a low-speed port or
got in a cycle of conecct...BA-BUMP...and disconnect...
BE-DUMP.
'Okay, must be the device...everything else works...'
Nope, the scanner works great on other machines. Drat.
ax5 BIOS...the later ones say nothing about USB fixes.
Check all the driver revs, both SOYO/VIA and microsoft
USB 2.0 support...all good.
Time for path of least resistance, like I finally took
when the built in LAN wouldn't work and play well with
the on-board sound. Off to Radio Shack.
Ah! Radio Shack has a Compaq NEC-based 4-port PCI
USB card on sale cheap. And I have one slot left!
Plug it in, and hope things boot. They do. XP sees
it. Could it be? YES! Plug in the scanner and all is
well. All the devices on the old ports work, and
the scanner is happy on one of the new ones. Fine.
Now I have a machine with no less than 8 direct
USB ports. That's better than little minihubs
all over the place to cover mouse, joystick, printer,
PDA, and all without using the ones up front on
the case.
Anybody else find that the KT400 USB ports just don't
like certain 2.0 devices, perhaps in particular with
the Bayone device installed?
