just bunch of components from tigerdirect.com and when I try to install
win XP pro starts setting up installation files stops on "".dll and says
enter
to retry or esc to skip some files pushing enter works but there are
three that wont go and if I skip them it wont finish installing I have
tried deferent os win 2000 pro and Linux mandrake 7.1 and run into some
kind of problem on all. hard drive tests to be good

abit KV7-V
AMD sempron 3000+
Ultra 512MB PC3200 DDR 400MHz CL3
Maxtor 200GB EIDE HD 7200/8MB/ATA-133
ATI radeon 9550
PSU: A Power 400W

Also bios is only showing HD to be 136 GB
And If I select fail-safe defaults and reboot hangs on memory count

done was update BIOS.

I also assume you are pressing F6 when installing Windows XP/2000 to load
the SATA drivers, and the equivalent for Linux ?

Josh,

It appears to me that there are two issues here, (a) the hard drive is only
seen as 136gb, and (b) no OS will install because of some loading fault,
however these maybe related.

(a) Questions
1a. Did you do the update on the BIOS or was it already Vers 14?
1b. Did you clear the CMOS using the jumper on the motherboard?
2a. Are there jumpers on the hard drive which limits its "seen" capacity?
2b. Do you have another motherboard you can link the hard drive to and if so
does it display as 200gb or 136gb?

(b) Questions
1. Is the Windows XP, pre SP1, SP1 or SP2 ?
2. Is the Windows 2K, pre SP3, SP3 or SP4 ?

Reason for asking these questions is in the last 2 weeks I have built 3
systems, 2 based on the KV7-V and one on KV7, the people whom were trying to
install had similar issues. Using the knowledge from these recent builds I
have found several reasons are common to installation problems.

Hi Josh,

Last couple of things and then I'm outta idea's.

1.
Have you tried switching the jumpers on the back of the drive to CS/MA/SL,
this being,
CS = Cable Select ( the preferred method )
MA = Master
SL = Slave.
Try setting all the IDE devices to CS, and which ever one you want to be the
"master" has to be the one furthest from the motherboard end.

2.
Within the BIOS, the section "Standard CMOS features", select the channel on
which the drive is reported, and set the sub options,
IDE Channel (xx Master/Slave) .. to AUTO
Access Mode ... to AUTO

If these suggestions fail then presently I am unsure what is wrong.

I built a KT7A for my daughter a few years back. Recently it started acting
up so I tried a clean install of XP pro. I experienced the same problems you
described in your post. The install disk would hang on different .dll files
and finally would freeze. I ran memtest86 and discovered one of the memory
modules had gone bad. I recommend you get a copy of memtest86 (free) and
check your ram.

Good Luck
Jeff
