Hi,

i have two laptops one is new and one is old. The old laptop is a
gateway solo 5300 and the new one is an hp, sorry i dont know the
model number. Anyway, teh gateway has been plugged in at all times,
and now the battery meter is very unreliable as is the charge. My
question is if i use a laptop to serve as a desktop, (plugged in at
all times) should i take out the battery? And by leaving the battery
in my old gateway, the reason that it is dead? and suggestions or
solutions are greatly appreciated!

thanks,

-Andrew

Hi Andrew,
You should have taken out the battery if you didn't need it for
long periods of time. It wouldn't have hurt the system. As regards the
Gateway laptop's readouts and battery life, you should probably have
been completely discharging and recharging the battery once a month.
There should be a software program on the laptop to do this. This is
standard for most laptop batteries to prevent decay.
It is likely that a new battery would get your readings to
correct. If not, it is possible that you might need a new AC adapter
to achieve this. It is likely that the continued AC use of the laptop
combined with no discharge/recharge of the battery could be your
problem with it.
