My inspiron 5150 has a strange behavior :
In my garage (temperature 15 °C), the laptop starts without any
problem.
But im my office (temperature 20 °C) it starts a few second showing the
start screen Dell 5150 series, then stops, then starts and so on, till
the screen stays black.
I remove the DVD player but nothing changes
What 's the matter ?
With kind regards

other than tempature, what else might be different when you start it in the
office vs the garage? conencted to a printer, a usb drive, an ac apater,
anything?

thermal sensor. it seems obvious that the temp is much hotter and his
vents must be blocked. perhaps he needs his fan and heat sink blown out.

it is a possible reason but i wouldn't say that the 'obvious' one.... could
be that he has a dead power outlet in the office (switched off by a wall
switch perhaps for some reason) and a nearly dead battery in the laptop.
this combination would produce the same behavior of starting to boot,
showing the bios splash page, and then shutting right down...

Thank you for your help.
No difference between the configuration in the garage and in the
office: laptop alone.
I have the same results between garage and office when my laptop is
connected with a ac adapter.
With kind regards

I've seen similar symptoms on overheating 5150s. Those were the subject of
a lawsuit (see www.lundellsettlement.com). I suspect that's what you've
got, but you could try temporarily turning down the thermostat in the office
to verify for yourself that overheating is the problem. If it is, I don't
know that there are any really satisfactory remedies. (All the lawsuit did
was force Dell to extend the warranty a little longer for this model. It
didn't really fix the problem.)

A friend has a 5150 with a slightly different problem. Maybe. Her laptop
suddenly shuts down from seconds to 15 minutes after start-up. Just random.
Obviously the shutdowns 5 seconds after pressing the power button aren't
heat related. It's off warranty and she was advised that it's probably a
motherboard issue.
