LaserJet 5 smell

I have a client with a refurb LaserJet 5 I sold her. She complains that the
printer emits an almost-like-burning smell when it warms up and prints. I have
an LJ5M here, and it emits a slightly unpleasant odor when it prints. What could
be the possible causes of a smelly LJ5? Any filters that need to be changed?
Parts wearing out?

Thanks much, Ben

We have the HP 5SI and a few of the newer ones and they don't make any
smells. As far as I can tell. I have a 4 SI in my office and that
makes a terrible racket when it warms up but no smell.

I have on changing the toner found that there is a smell of toner or
oil (I think its oil) and that may be what your smelling when it is
fully hot in the unit.

Did you replace the fuser when refurbishing the LJ5?
I had a similar problem with a photocopy machine, and
it turned out to be dirty fuser rolls. I suppose any
printer/copier that uses heat to fuse toner to the
paper would be susceptible to this type of problem.
If replacing the fuser rolls doesn't help, it might
be the oven itself.
The faint unpleasant odor from your LJ5M is probably
ozone emitted by the corona. Most printers have ozone
filters, but in my experience a dirty ozone filter
doesn't emit a burning smell, it just doesn't filter
as well and you get more ozone in the air. Of course,
someone who doesn't know how ozone smells might describe
it as an "almost-burning-like smell" for lack of a
better analogy.

Take care,

Could the "almost-like-burning" smell be better described as a chemical
smell? If so, I think the printer has a carbon filter sponge over with the
cooling fan. Replacing it will remove the smell.

Isnt there some sort of Ozone filter or something in that printer? I have the
Service manual on PDF if you want me to email it to you. Its for the LJ4 and 5
series. It could also have been owned by some smoker and the smell is coming
from that fan on the top rear right side.

Mine sometimes smells a little like ozone at times

Thanks for the offer. I have many of the LJ-series maintenance manuals as PDFs,
including the 4/5.

So far, the possibilities seem to be ozone filter or fuser stinking up the
joint. Any other possibilities? ... Ben Myers

If it smells like jet engine exhaust or lighter fluid, replace the fuser.
One of the rollers is a "soft" roller and has a liquid in it (silicone?)
that leaks out thru a pinhole in the roller coating and the hot roller
burnes it. It usually occurs worst when printing after being idle for 12
hours or so, unless the leak is bad, then it's a constand odor when
printing.
