When I click on Internet Explorer on Desktop it gives the egg timer
for a few seconds then goes back to the arrow and doesn`t load. I need
to click on I.E. several times before it finally, slowly, loads. This
problem seems to apply with all the short-cuts. Any ideas? Thanks,
Rob.

Run antivirus, spyware checks.

Did you do anthing with the mahcine recently before it started this
behavior, or has it always done this?

Didn`t do anything and it`s a fairly new machine. the problem started
about 2 weeks ago.I use Avast anti-virus and Spysweeper. Avast did
tell me I`d got a virus but it then got rid of it, but it was around
the same time that it started. If I try to load Internet Explorer for
instance, I click on it on desktop, the Egg timer appears for a few
seconds then goes, but if I then wait about 3 or 4 mins Interent
explorer then loads. Any suggestions?

I'd venture to guess that your are running WinXP, then?

Do you experience slowness if you run the Internet Explorer executable
directly? Navigate to c:\program files\internet explorer and
double-click on ieexplorer.exe (it may just say iexplorer, depending on
your settings). Since your desktop shortcuts are suspect, I would
click on the "start" button, select "programs", then "accessories",
then "windows explorer", then navigate from there.

Since you are experiencing this slowness with all your desktop
shortcuts, I would check to see if the shortcuts are still valid. For
example, if you right click on a desktop shortcut, select properties,
look under the Shortcut tab, and Target should show the location of the
file. Your recent virus infestation may have moved things around a
bit, or changed some registry entries. This would cause Windows to
have to search for the programs.

I'm not familiar with Avast, but it wouldn't hurt to update the virus
definitions, then run it again (overnight or something)
