Long Shutdown time

When I shut down XP the "Savings Settings" takes 75 seconds and the
"Shutting Down" takes 15 secs. It didnt used to take this long. During
"Saving Settings" I dont see a lot of hard disk activity (drive light).
This is very long compared to all my other PCs.
Any thoughts on what might be causing this or some tips to speed it up?
thank you

Some systems do this, and I don't really know why. I found that a
bunch of Windows 2000 Pro systems that were installed with SP4
"slipstreamed" into the installation media were affected by this,
where machines that were installed with "gold" release (SP0) media and
then upgraded to SP4 later were not.

However, I did find a fix in the "User Profile Hive Cleanup Service"
download that is available from Microsoft. It is for both Windows 2000
and XP users.

Validation is presently required to download this:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

or, if that link breaks:

Does the computer have a very long startup time, with the same realtive lack of
hard drive activity? If so, the cause may be either a registry cluttered with
obsolete and useless entries or a badly fragmented registry, which cannot be
defragged in the normal way.

CCleaner will take care of most of the obsolete registry entries, and PageDefrag
will handle the registry fragmentation. Using CCleaner to get rid of junk
files may also help, but be careful here 'cause CCleaner can also get rid of
cookies needed for logins to favorite web sites... Ben Myers
