Macbook Pro keyboard

My BIL bought a Macbook Pro in November. He's on a trip. Last night he
found that he could not type into a Spotlight search box. Then he was
able to type in fewer and fewer applications. Now he can't type anywhere.

When he restarts, Finder windows that were closed show up open. What
could be wrong?

One cause of not being able to type is that he may have mistakenly hit
the F6 (Num Lock) Key which is used when using the keyboard for entering
numbers.

Thanks. At Apple's discussion forums there are lots of complaints about
MacBook Pro keyboards that don't respond. It's been going on for
months. My BIL solved his problem by plugging in another keyboard.
