How make basic settings on OfficeJet 590 without software?

Officejet 590's software ("Document Assistant") simply won't load
properly on my WinXP machine. Can't work out why but the software
looks very old and is written for Win95.

I seem to recall a way of making some basic settings from the keypad
which is on the OfficeJet itself.

For example, setting the number of phone rings before fax answers
the phone line.

Can anyone recall any key sequences to be able to enter these basic
settings?

Does the HP web site have any newer software for the 590 available for download,
or is this yet another orphaned product? Answering my own question, here is the
URL to download what is supposed to make the 590 work under XP. Good luck.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...&dlc=en&os=228

Go to www.hp.com , click on "Support and Drivers", click the radio button for
drivers and utilities, then enter OfficeJet 590 in the search field... Ben Myers

Hi Ben, thanks for helping out. It turns out that the so-called XP software
from HP is just Win95-vintage software. The INF file seems a mess of
commenting out when I look inside it. The drivers in the "XP" package are
pre-XP as they are unsigned by Microsoft.

My Officejet 590 certainly feels very orphaned.

If XP drivers are unsigned, this only means that the manufacturer (HP in this
case) did not pay the necessary extortion fees to Micro$oft to get the "sign".
For the money, Micro$oft's labs do some simple testing, too.

What happens when you install the drivers and ignore Micro$oft's warning that
the drivers are unsigned? Often, the Windows 2000 drivers for a device will
work just fine when installed under XP... Ben Myers
