The P5B chipset, along with many other chipsets, will address a maximum
of ~ 3GB DDR2 RAM. This is because a 32 bit OS needs address space for
internal functions and it uses the upper addresses to do so. A 32 bit
OS can address up to 4 GB. It needs the upper ~ 1 GB for functions as
stated above, leaving you with ~ 3GB of usable memory.
Any 64 bit OS will not have this limitation, so the maximum capacity of
memory for the MB can be used. Be sure to check Asus's QVL (Qualified
Vendor List) for the specific MB to see what memory is best to use.
Since prices are so low at this time, I would buy the second 2GB kit, as
sooner or later, you will probably have a 64 bit OS.
I Have the P5B-Plus MB and am using the Corsair 2 GB kit from Newegg:

It runs great with the MB running at a FSB of 1333 MHz, which puts the
memory at 833 MHz. Latency is set at 4-4-4-12 (spec is 5-5-5-12). Good
memory.
