Could I please ask you all a question about the best module(s) combination
to upgrade memory in an HP Pavilion 6535? I have never done this before and
am therefore the humblest of newbies.

Quick scoop on machine (running Windows 98) that I found online:
* Standard Memory: 64 MB (removable)
* Max. Memory: 256 MB
* Memory Expansion: 2 sockets
* Memory: PC66/PC100 SDRAM DIMMs
* Memory Size Options: 32/64/128 MB Modules
* Chip Description: 100MHz PC100, 168p DIMM, 3.3v, Sync

It appears that I have more than one combination to add module(s). Could
you please tell me what module upgrade or combination of module upgrades
will be best for system performance?

Thank you!

The Pavilion 6535 is powered by a 466MHz Celeron processor, so you can add
either PC66 or PC100 memory. Some, but not all, PC133 memory may work, too.

No matter which speed of memory you add, the performance of the system will be
the same, limited by the speed of the processor.

According to the specs, two 128MB DIMMs are the maximum amount of memory
permitted with the system. Unless there are limitations imposed by the
motherboard BIOS, the Intel 810 chipset on the motherboard supports 2 x 256MB of
memory for a maximum of 512MB. If you decide to try 256MB DIMMs, make sure
that they are low-density, with 16 memory chips, 8 per side... Ben Myers

Thanks Ben!

* Even if the specs say the machine has a 256MB max memory capacity, I could
still install 512MB???? Will this give me a much bigger performance boost
than the 256MB? In setup it says I have "core version 4.6," "BIOS Revision
1.12 4/19/00."

* Either way (256 or 512), I'm assuming I'd have to remove the 64 MB
standard memory first, correct?

No, as Ben said the performance will remain the same - determined
by the CPU, but it may seem to be more 'fluid' when starting new
applications.

Thanks Graham. I think he was referring to the speed of the RAM -- PC66,
PC100, or PC133.
"No matter which speed of memory you add, the performance of the system will
be the same, limited by the speed of the processor."

I was referring to the amount.

IF the system will take 512MB (a big IF, because only HP knows how the BIOS will
behave, and everyone from HP has forgotten by now), it will certainly perform
better because the use of the hard drive as a swap file will be cut way down.

You have to remove the 64MB memory if you plan to install 2 DIMMs of higher
capacity... Ben Myers

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but do you really want to add anything to that antique??? If you are getting memory for free or something, sure, but I don't know if I'd put another dime into it. If it works for what you're doing now, perhaps just checking email or the weather, stick with that rather than adding more $ to the system. Unfortunately, one can reach a point of diminishing returns.

This link, www.crucial.com has a nice primer on memory, etc.

Thanks Chet. You are absolutely right about this being an antique. I'm going to try 128 MB upgrade and see how it goes. Luckily, the risk is about $30.

Even $30 is high these days for 128MB of PC66 memory. I'll sell you 128MB for
$20 including first class mail. And you may be able to find one for even
less... Ben Myers
