Messenger Plus & HP printer conflict

This is just a post to pass on some information. Hopefully it will prove
useful to someone else.

Over Xmas vacation I updated the video adapter and my daughter installed
some games and also hounded me into installing Messenger Plus (without the
sponsor). This was on an old HP pavilion 8380, Windows 98, and a HP DeskJet
712C printer. Suddenly after many years of working flawlessly, I started
getting hpfvls 13 errors when I tried printing and the program would close.

Using msconfig and a process of elimination and trial and error, I
discovered that the problem went away if Messenger Plus was not allowed to
start. I uninstalled Messenger Plus but must have done something wrong
because it remained in the msconfig startup although I could not find it
elsewhere on the computer. The printer would not work properly if Messenger
Plus was checked in the msconfig startup even though it had been
uninstalled. Finally I edited the Registry and deleted it.

All is working fine now. I've no idea what caused the conflict but am
content to have found a solution. A google search revealed that others have
experienced a problem with hpfvls errors with varying causes, solutions and
sometimes no solutions. If there is still someone out there besides myself
who is using this old technology, perhaps this post will save them several
frustrating hours.

Lois
