Minolta Dimage Xt / SD card reader probs

I recently bought a Minolta Dimage Xt digital camera.
According to the manual, windows XP does not require any drivers to be
installed, and should recognise the camera as a removal drive upon
connection to the USB port.
My windows XP, however, did not. Instead, it started the "add new
hardware wizard", which failed to install the device correctly.

To get round this, I bought an SD card reader. Again, same problem...
manual says windows XP does not require a driver to be installed, but
windows XP fails to recognise it as a removable drive and starts the
hardware wizard instead.

Any suggestions?
