I Got a new refurbished linksys modem ($27 delivered from Buy.com). I got
tired of paying Charter's rental fee.

PIECE OF CAKE.

Took 2 minutes max to install. I did then have to call Charter to have them
register the new MAC address. At first it didn't work but then we just reset
the router and the modem.

I'll keep everything for a week and then return Charter's modem to them.
ALSO, my connection does seem to be going much faster. (My modem from
Charter was probably an old one). I did not expect any change in speed.

Congrats! Always nice to:

1. have things work out for the best, and
2. hear about it!

Yes, so many times someone has a problem and we never find out from the
OP if any suggestion posted actually worked for them and get the final
outcome.
Congrats on a job well done. A modem/router power reset usually fixes a
multitude of problems.

Nicely done, Mel! I've replaced cable modems myself a number of times.
Anyone paying a cable ISP (Charter, Comcast, Cox, etc) a monthly fee
for a cable modem can get a payback in less than a year by buying and
installing their own... Ben Myers

Ben:

In this case, 5 1/2 months. I am HOPING I don't regret having bought a
refurbished modem, although it did say it was refirbished certified by
CISCO/Linksys. There is a 90-day warranty. I have a feeling that if
there was a problem I'd know it quickly. As I said, it does seem
speedier!

Actually, Ben, the modem rental fee was $3. per month and I was paying
that for MANY years. That was okay. I guess the increase to $5. was
kind of the tipping point. None of this is big money but it did spur
me on to look into getting my own modem. Then I saw the deal through
buy.com and grabbed it. I am always very hesitant (uptight) about
doing hardware stuff, but this was easy!
