Monitor Viewable Width

I have been using a 17 inch Viewmate monitor with a Compaq computer
running Windows 98 for several years. I recently switched to a HP
computer running Windows XP and noticed that the viewable screen area
is not as wide, even with the horizontal width set to 100%. Does
anyone know how to fix this?

I suggest to play a little with the *frequency* settings, i.e. Control
Panel -> Display -> Settings -> Advanced (the rest of the settings are
probably dependent on the driver you have, for example for my ATI
driver, it is "Screen refresh rate:" on the "Monitor" tab).

For most monitor, the viewable/used area is dependent on the
frequency/refresh_rate used.

Thanks - Increasing the refresh rate does decrease the viewable width.
However, the setting was already at the lowest rate (60 hz) so it
looks like I can't go any wider. I would have never guessed refresh
rate is related to viewable width.

If possible, try a few different ones, i.e. it is not a question of
higher or lower refresh rate, but of a *different* one, i.e. try *all*
available ones until you have the best result.
