Motherboard Replacement on Dell Inspiron 1150

Hey everyone,

My motherboard recently stopped working and I've ordered a new one
from Dell. I have pretty novice experience working with computer
hardware (installed/replaced memory, cd drives, etc.) and I was hoping
to replace the MB myself to save some costs. However, I cannot find
ANY guides online that show how to replace a motherboard on the 1150.

Any ideas?

Yes. Wait for a reply here from Ben Myers.

Unless my memory is failing, Ben caught this same lack of documentation on
the 1100 some time ago and then proceeded to successfully replace the board
anyway.

Ben's kind of good at this stuff and I believe has seen your specific
issue.......

Sorry, I meant 1150 rather than 1100....

Here is the section of the service manual for the INSP1150 concerning
replacing the service board. You should download the entire service manual,
since there are references to other tasks that must be accomplished, before
reaching the system board.

the op can certainly do this him/herself if patient and mechanically
inclined.
but i would direct them to start reading at this point which start from
disconnected a/c power and battery and holding down the power button to
discharge any residual power... then how to disassemble the case... etc.

since this is your first time, i suggest that the op makes notes on a piece
of paper and tapes down each set of screws so he/she knows where to put them
back when reassembling the machine... it can become mind boggling the first
time out... good luck.

ps. i am curious how much the new board cost you. they seems to sell for
about $200 on ebay. recently had a friend who had a inspiron 5150 die and
which made me aware of the unfortunate common and widespread problem with
the motherboards in these models. dell apparently replaced the motherboards
out of warranty up until 9/2007 but now they tell you to take a hike.
doesn't seem right to me that they can stick customers with a laptop that
has a know problem and not stand behind it. given the age of the machine
most people probably would not bother to fix it anyway, but those that do
end up with a bad taste in their mouth for dell.

yikes, dell wants $389 for the inspiron 5150 motheboard bios cd and thermal
grease.
considering i was able to purchased a fully loaded vostros 1000 over the
holidays for $399 you can be sure i am not going to buy this motherboard.

A wise observation for any first (or even second/third) time hardware
repair. Some things you may do a time or two with far to much time in
between to guarrenty getting it right just from memory.

Hey all,

thanks so much for the help! I'm going to get started on this project
later on today, and will let everyone know how it goes.

The motherboard cost me about $250 if I'm not mistaken, and Dell said
they would do the replacement for an additional $150.

As for the option of just replacing the entire laptop, believe me I
wish I could. I'm a college student so my funds are very limited. It's
ironic though because just a few months ago, I had to replace my THIRD
hard drive for this laptop due to the usual Inspiron problems. I
figured that would be my last hardware issue, but of course here's
another one.

Anyways, thanks everyone and I'll post again later on my progress.

Yep. Wanted nearly $300.00 for a 15.4" WXGA LCD display for an Inspiron
6000 with only a 90-day warranty.

No thanks. Could and did find an entire replacement i6000 for that money -
with over 8mos remaining Dell warranty.

Not sure what guides their spare parts pricing. Some items are reasonable
and others aren't even close. Probably a lot of factors I suppose.
