If I want to move a RAID configured drive into a different machine
(non RAID configured) what do I need to do to the drive and/or the new
system?

Using a utility such as DBAN to erase the drive should do the trick. If the
new system has the same or similar RAID hardware (whether RAID is enabled or
not), it might be a good idea to erase the drive on a conventional disk
controller in another system.

I've seen RAID hardware that would act rather strangely when dealing with a
drive that had been previously used on another RAID setup.

Move all the data off. Move to new machine. Format.

Backup the data. Move the drives. Set up the RAID array. Restore the data.

I'd be inclined to break the RAID array before moving the drives
anywhere else.
