HELP!!!!!! (I've fallen and I can't get up!) At least that is how I currently
feel. Maybe someone in this newsgroup can help?!

I have an HP8655C computer. (One of the lucky ones with the problem
motherboard.) Anyway, I recently installed a new graphics card AND a new
modem.

Now I'm having problems on both installs.

First the modem: I installed the modem (U.S. Robotics) and the device drivers.
If I go to the control panel, modems, general: I see both modems (new and
old). When I highlight the new modem and then click diagnostics, I see this
modem in COM1. I click on More Information I get the following error message:

"The modem failed to respond. Make sure it is properly connected and turned
on. If it is an internal modem or is connected, verify that the interrupt for
the port is properly set."

I guess I don't understand what I'm suppose to do.

Now the graphics card:
When I startup the computer with
1) the monitor connected to the new graphics card, I get no display.
2) the monitor connected to the old graphics card, I'm getting the following
error (before it goes into windows):

Resource Conflict. PCI display controller on motherboard.
Bus:01,Device:0B,Function: 00.

Again, not sure what I'm suppose to do to fix this.

Can anyone help, please.

Thanks,
Shirley

I'm not for sure about this but it seems you should remove the old modem
and the old display driver as well.

I am curious about your comment of the problem motherboard. One of my
pc's that is at my sisters right now is an 8655C. Can you clarify what
the problem motherboard is about. I know the one I have seems to run
slow despite the maintenance I do to it every week. Thanks.

Some (many?) of the 8655C computers are having "freezing" problems when
browsing web pages. The problem has been narrowed down to a motherboard
problem. The "bad" motherboard has a part #5184-9628. Fixes include changing
the motherboard, installing a new cpu but one that runs at 100 rather than 133,
or installing a new video card.

Possibly to resolve the modem installation problem:

1. go into Control Panel->System->Device Manager and remove BOTH modems, power
down the computer, disconnect the power (always VERY important when working
inside a computer), and remove the US Robotics modem. If the old modem has not
been removed, take it out, too.
2. Now power up the computer again and examine all the devices shown in the
Device Manager. Take note of all the Communications Ports (COM1, COM2, COM3,
etc.)
3. If the US Robotics modem is a PCI modem (plugs into a white slot), nothing
else to do except install it (computer powered down and unplugged while doing
so), then install the modem drivers.
4. If the USR modem is an ISA modem (plugs into a black slot), you can set its
jumpers either for Plug and Play or to use a specific combination of IRQ and
hardware port. Try the Plug and Play jumper setting. If the modem then works,
you're done. If not, post another message here... Ben Myers

Of all the fixes for this problem, apparently well-known by HP and its
motherboard manufacturer, the easiest is to install a CPU running at 100 MHz
front side bus or even a Celeron CPU running at 66MHz. Have you considered
buying and installing a replacement CPU?

Some of these motherboards are also problematic as far as installing a video
card. What sort of video card is it? Brand and model? The motherboard SHOULD
automatically set itself to use the PCI card when it is installed.

Once the video card is installed and operational, you then have to install the
software drivers for the card... Ben Myers

Not being a hardware expert, do you have any brand/model suggestions
on replacement cpu's? I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for
except that I need one that is running at a lower MHz.

If I were to replace the CPU with a slower one, would I notice the
slower speed?

Thanks.

The motherboard uses only Intel CPUs, and it takes Socket 370 processor.

I think that your logical choices are 600, 650, or 700MHz Pentium III
processors. Above 700, the voltage drops down. The 600MHz Socket 370 CPU is
made for both 100 and 133MHz front-side bus. You want the 100MHz flavor.

You could also use a Celeron processor operating at a number of speeds: 766,
733, 700, 666, 633, or 600 MHz. Above 766, the operating voltages of the
Celeron are not likely compatible with your motherboard... Ben Myers

The HP Pavilion 8655C that is over at my sisters right now (and I just
finished paying for on a 48 month lease to own) seems to be so slow and
the hard drive sounds like it is just working furiously all the time. I
did do a clean install of XP Pro on this machine. And weekly, I run Ad-
Aware, Spybot, Wincleaner and a couple of other cleanup utilities as
well as delete all history, temp files. The pc is only used for usual
stuff - e-mail, some light graphic programs, light games and the 30 gig
hard drive has lots of free space. So, can/do I assume that it is a MB
problem causing the aggravating slowness with this pc? My sister can't
afford to buy a new pc and I don't want to have to again buy a new one
for myself so I can give her mine as was the case with the HP. I would
like to keep this one running as long as I can. I had thought perhaps it
was the 5400 hard drive causing the problem and I was thinking about
getting a new hard drive for it but if the hard drive isn't the problem
then I would like to know. Thanks for all info - much appreciated.

One way to check is to open the computer and check the part number of the
motherboard. It should be located by the first expansion slot. The bad
motherboards have a part number of 5184-9628.

I know this pc is also VERY SLOW. Our old 233 runs rings around this one.

I'm trying to talk my son into getting a Dell.

Ummm.... Just for starters,:

1. You DID remove the old modem and delete it from the control panel
and/or device manager BEFORE installing the new one didn't you?

2. You DID remove the old graphics card (or if it's integrated into
the motherboard, disable it either in BIOS or via a mobo jumper).
BEFORE installing the new one didn't you?

Please realize I don't know all the myriad HP configurations out there
or anything at all about the 8655C, so I'm shooting from the hip. But
there's just something about your description that rings little bells
in my head... ;-)

In any event, a definitive answer to the above will give me or someone
else a cleaner information base to work from.
