Need Serial Card and Long Cable

Ok, I finally won the special cable I needed to hook my weather station
up to my computer so I can put my weather info on the net.

The cable hooks up by serial. My computer is a Dell Dimension E510. It
does not have a serial card.

So, I need a serial card. Any recommendations? Anything on amazon.com
you recommend?

Also, I just found out that serial cables can come in long lengths. I
had no idea
I could run a serial cable thirty feet! I need a cable to run under the
living room
floor up to my Dell in the corner of the room. I would say I need 25 or 30
feet of cable.
Where do I get one? Again, any recommendations?

And finally, since I will be opening up my E510 for the first time I
think I should
clean it out with compressed air. I've done this before on my old Compaq
from
2000. Anything I need to be aware of when using compressed air to clean out
the dust
with this computer (E510)? Dust is built up some.

Thanks!

SIIG has been making add-in PCI cards for a long time and they make serial
cards.

I have no clue where to find a long serial cable these days.

You might also use a Q-tip or two to dislodge the dust bunnies, and loosen the
caked dust on some of the surfaces. Otherwise, take the computer outside on a
clear day to blast the dust out. You don't want to inhale the dust... Ben Myers

One caution on blowing out the dust. Get one of the canned sprayers.
Costco sells them in a 3-pack. Don't use a common air hose like you
might have in your garage. The air passing through the nozzle can
develop high levels of static electricity. Manufacturers use a
special non-static nozzle for air blowing to prevent damage to the
components. Plus you can do a lot of damage with too much air
pressure.

You should be able to find everything you need, at Blackbox.com
http://www.blackbox.com/

It won't be cheap, but it will be high quality and dependable.

You should be able to find either a long cable itself, or cable extenders
that would allow you to use a serial cable over long distances.

Would something like this work? I'm just looking for a simple serial
card that
works in my Dell E510. And, something under 40.00 would be nice.

You could try http://www.brainboxes.com/ .There are loads of places to
get serial ports (http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?
WebProductID=16998) for example. There are also usb to RS232
converters. I have never had one that did not work, although I have
had one that would only work on USB1.1 - that got solved by using a
hub in a USB 2 plughole.

Serial cables are easy to make yourself - you just need a soldering
iron and some 9-way D-type connectors. (e.g. http://tinyurl.com/26f357)
Depending on the baud rate I have run RS232 up to 200 metres, and
RS485 to 11Km.
If you only need an extension, it is connected pin-to-pin, socket to
plug.

Google is your friend:
http://www.lammertbies.nl/comm/cable/RS-232.html
http://www.windmill.co.uk/wiring.html
and a million others

Serial cards must be old technology? China Mart did not have any. Circuit
City
did not have any. The two office supply store did not have any. Guess I
will get
one off the net. Was going to do that anyway.

Serial peripherals are no longer common for domestic use, but still
very widely used industrially and in PointOfSale systems. Personally,
I think serial is better than USB, but I am a luddite. I have never
bought a motherboard without an RS232 port, or at least a header on
the mother board, because I need to talk to prom programmers etc.

I bet your retailers don't sell parallel port printers, either.

I found something cheaper on ebay. Would this be ok for my Dell running
XP?
If it is I will buy it.
