I need some help... I have a HP Laserjet 5L connected to a winxp and
win98 computer. When I print a certain report from the winxp machine it
works fine, but when I print the same report from the win98 computer it
just doesn't work. The last line on each page overflows. I have done so
many changes to the configuration on the win98 side that I have already
lost count. The only think I can think of is the driver. On the winxp
computer the driver version is 5.00. On the win98 computer the driver
version is 4.00. I went to the HP web site downloaded the latest driver
but I still get driver 4.00 for win98. How can I get version 5.00? Any
info would be greatly appreciated.

Add memory to the 5L, or print at a lower resolution, e.g 300 dpi instead of
600... Ben Myers

This is a common problem with Windows and all printers that have on-board

Ben thanks for the reply but what does memory have anything to with the
drivers? All I want is to know is if anyone has been able to make the
drivers that work on winxp work on win98 thats all. Thanks again for
the reply.

Possibly I misunderstood your statement "The last line on each page overflows."
Does this mean that the last line on each page is printed all by itself on the
next piece of paper to come out of the printer? If so, your only recourse is
to check, double-check and triple-check the settings for the printer in the Win
98 environment, and also in the program that actually does the printing. For
example, if Word is used to print a document, different settings for the printer
margins within Word will change the way things are printed.

The only other possibility for relief here is if HP issued an updated driver for
Windows ME. There is generally a high probability that drivers released for
95, 98 or ME will work on the other DOS-based releases of Windows. If there is
no updated driver beyond 4.0 from HP, even for ME, you are stuck.

If "The last line on each page overflows." means that the last line of the
report is never printed, then my original suggestion of a memory upgrade still
stands. The different versions of Windows are more or less efficient in the
way that data is generated for printers. I first learned this when upgrading a
client from a Win 3.1 computer to a Win 95 computer. Reports producted with
Excel and Win 3.1 printed perfectly, but the same reports with Win 95 and a
newer version of Excel did not print properly. Instead the page ejected after
printing part of a page. The solution was a memory upgrade for the printer.

One last thing. Two last things. You can never depend on absolute
consistency between printer (and other) drivers on different versions of
Windows. And you can bet as sure as the sun rises every day that Microsoft and
its Independent Hardware Vendors like HP will continute to create more and more
bloated software with ever less efficient printer drivers. That's been the
trend from Windows 1.03 to the present day... Ben Myers

Ben, the last line on each page prints all by it self on the next page.
I have try to print the report from other PCs with the same results. On
XP it prints fine but with WIN98 it doesn't. There is nothing wrong in
regards to the margins, etc... When I printed the test page from XP and
98 I notice that on XP the driver version shows as 5.00 and on 98 it
shows as 4.00. So I have concluded that I need version 5.00 on the
windows 98 machine. There is something on this newer driver that prints
my report just fine. Thanks again for your help.

Now I understand perfectly. Unfortunately, I doubt that you will ever see a
Version 5.00 driver for Windows 98. If HP hasn't done it already, they won't
ever do it. Windows 98 is unsupported by Microsoft and just about everyone
else. The LaserJet 5L is no longer in production and no longer sold, so HP has
zero motivation to do anything at this late date.

I think you are going to have to search for some other workable alternative if
you want to print the report on the 5L from a Windows 98 computer.

The lj622en.exe download from the HP web site is the same for Windows ME or
Windows 98, so there is no improvement possible by using the ME driver instead
of the 98 driver... Ben Myers

Yeah, I have try those drivers as well and they didn't work. Thanks for
your help/info on this matter. I guess I have to get a new laser
printer or upgrade the PC to XP. Thanks again.
