Neo 2 and SPDIF output

Seeing that there is nobody in Toronto that sells the S Bracket and that I
have to order from the US (and getting charged like crazy on handling and
shipping charges), pin 3 should be the SPDIF output along with using the
ground on pin 5 according to the manual.

However, when I plug in a set of wires to these two pins with it not
connecting to anything at the other end of the, the CPU utilization spikes
and it doesn't return to normal until I unplug the wires!

I was able to use the SPDIF on my SB Live without using their daughter
board successfully, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work here. Anybody
tried this? Until then, I'll use my SB until I get the S Bracket or find a
workaround to this.
