First, the components... Chaintech VNF4 Ultra mobo
WD 74GB Raptor SATA drive (no raid)
Antec 430W PSU (20-24 pin adapter)
Chaintech 6600GT PCI-E vidcard
1GB (2X512) Corsair DDR400 RAM
AMD Athlon 64 3200 (939 pin)

This is just to get up and running. The hard drive was recognized
immediately by the bios and initial setup went fine until I started
installing Win2000 Pro SP2. I thought it took longer than usual to
format the drive, and the following OS install also seemed to drag.
When I finally got a desktop screen I couldn't believe how slow it ran,
almost to the point of unusable. Installing the chipset drivers was
nearly impossible, I'm not sure if they even took before my frustration
reached it's peak. I'm currently trying again, but it seems to be
doing the same. The drive was recognized by the bios, as was the CPU
and memory, so I assume that's OK and no 3rd party drivers need to go
in. It posts almost instantly, the problems don't start until the OS
tries to load. Is WIN2K compatible with SATA? I really like the OS
and would rather not have to invest in WinXP. I ran West. Dig's
diagnostics and the drive checked good. What could I be doing wrong?

Thanks for any advice.....

Still no luck, same rotten performance after another install. I did
notice a CODE 75 during POST, but the BIOS works normally and the drive
is recognized. I only have CDs for utility files, no floppy to install
SATA drivers and nothing available from the web site. I'm running out
of ideas.....

Is your copy of Win2k pirated? That could be your prob. The OS is hacked.

Nope, the disc is clean. I used it on my old now defunct system
without any problems. I'm not impressed with Chaintech's website as
far as tech help. I did notice a CODE 75 during POST, still need to
find out what that means..... Wish me luck!

Win 2000 is NOT SATA compatible, I believe.

During the W2K installation you're prompted to hit F6 to load any
additional SCSI or RAID (storage) drivers. Have you checked to see if
there are w2k drivers for this controller set? If so you should be able
to load them there. The alternative is to boot from some other device
and see if the OS will recognize the drive in that configuration. This
is pretty much the same type of thing that happened with many of the
EIDE controller chipsets started being included on boards. There were
drivers available, but the install didn't know how to handle the
hardware until they were installed. The same still applies to some SCSI
controllers, etc. The more obscure ones, the new ones, etc.

You might also want to try slipstreaming SP4 and installing it directly.
If there are updated drivers in the OS later this may resolve your
problem. Loading the drivers during the text mode setup as above should
also do so however.
