Attn Dell enthusiasts,

My Dell dimension 4300 just crashed and rather than try to repair it I
purchased a new Dell Model Dimension E521.

I reinstalled "Scrabble Complete" for my wife, as I prefer wordbiz
online and when I clicked on the icon to run it with the disk in the
drive, the screen turned a funny color and froze.

I also have a new flat monitor in lieu of the old bulky CRT monitor.

The program worked perfectly on the old computer, which also had
windows XP and little memory.

Is there some kind of firewall in computer that stopping the program to
start?

In addition any opinion on the Dell Dimension E521 would be welcome.

Thanks.

Roger

compatibility issues was one of the biggest issues i always had with amd
processors. go back to them and see if they have a upgraded version.
check their tech support web site.

i think that if your time is worth over $50 an hour it is cheaper to buy a
new machine than to spend time fixing the old one. and if the old one is a
couple of years old then you also get a nice upgrade to show for it, rather
than your old computer just running again.

I just grabbed this quick search of a review, and while the game should be
fine for WinXP (even if the Dim4300 had WindowsMe), the requirements do
specify an Intel CPU.

Nevermind, here's the Atari support page for the game. Perhaps you'll see
your specific "crash" here and be able to get some ideas:

I'd be more interested to see you post back here as time passes. These are
the first Dell desktops (along with some other models) with the AMD PCU and
NVidia chipset, so not much is known at this point.

I suspect it'll be a great machine as I've seen them but have not used one
nor worked on/with one to any degree.

Your posts here would be valuable, imo.

One thing I noticed with this computer, It is impossible to listen to
Internet radio with dial up service, as it works a few seconds and then
starts to buffer. In addition when switching to other pages it does not
always D\L page and you get message cannot find server. Being a
snowbird, it is impractical to get highspeed service for four months,
as they get instructions screwed up in office.

My old Dell dimension 4300 Pentium 4 with 128k memory performed
better.

I think it is better to spend a few hundred dollars more and get a more
powerful computer.

That's about every computer on dial up. Don't miss it at all and I wonder
how I managed with it for so many years.

If you're in Florida for the winter, I'd be very surprised if you couldn't
simply work out a standard deal for 4 months. Meaning: don't give me the 6
months reduced or free or a rebate, please give me the standard rate of,
say, $30 or $40 per month and I'll even pay rental for the modem or buy the
modem outright if you like.

They make money on the modem sale and on the monthly, so what if they have
to send a guy out to the remote box and disconnect you (and then reconnect
next year). Seems like they'd have been asked this before.

Certainly possible given that dial up performance is going to stink on even
the most powerful gaming system out there, and made worse by the fact that
your new system is probably loaded with bloatware (unneeded software) not
unlike a new HP, Compaq, Sony, Gateway, or whatever.

Not sure what that means, but a faster computer wouldn't make fifty cents
worth of difference with that internet connection. Call your local ISP. All
they can say is "no".

I just set up an E521 for a friend. Internet radio worked fine with
DSL and intergated audio.
