New Tablet PC OS

Next Tablet PC OS, codenamed Lonestar, with a ver of 1.7, to be
announced at PDC (in the Exhibit Hall) and then at Comdex; not a 2.0,
but an upgrade nevertheless.

Whats in it: New TIP, improved recognition (shape), bug fixes. More
news to follow, later on today I'd imagine... (or maybe later on in
the week) .

Here's hoping to a quickly downloadable version! And not a slow and painful
wait like the MURP. :P

ArtRage, supposed to hit soon too, not sure tho, if at PDC or
Comdex...know that it will be offered on the Microsoft website as a
free download, least one version. I'd expect an enhanced version to be
commercially avail.

Christopher,

"New Tablet PC OS" - No, not yet.

The 1.7 refers to an SDK version, not a new version of the TabletPC OS.
The next "new version of the OS" is coming in the Windows "Longhorn"
timeframe.
"Lonestar" is an evolution/improvement to certain key TabletPC functions.
(and still under NDA, with no public release date set yet)

Oh yes - "Lonestar" is a great addition to the functionality and usability
of a TabletPC.
Unfortunately I am not at liberty to discuss it as it is still under NDA
(yes - odd if the guys at the PDC are showing it and talking about it in the
Exhibition hall) - still it is currently in development and thus subject to
change until we make a more formal announcement.

As we (the MVPs) have been saying all along, the next operating system from
Microsoft will be Longhorn, as previously announced. Might as well get all
excited about SP2 for Windows XP, due probably in summer of 2004. 8-)

Is the fact that it is still in NDA the reason why the new tablets are being
delayed? It would make sense that companies releasing new tablets would
design them around increased functionality. (I write this with some
impatience, because I am very interested in a couple of the machines whose
delivery dates keep moving away like a carrot stuck on a stick above my
head.)

It does seem odd to have it at exhibits in the developers conference but not
have a release or release date.

I'd be glad if there's a new SDK with some more cooler features.. hopefully
they fix the renderer bug.

As for a new version.. well.. as long as I can upgrade to the next version
of the Tablet PC XP.. WITHOUT exchanging hardware.. I'm fine with it :P
