NIC cannot receive packets but can send them

Hello, I am running Windows 2000 pro on a Compaq Presario 5000 (about
2 years old) and just a few days ago my pc could no longer access the
internet.
Network icon in the system tray shows that it is sending packets i.e.
250 but it also shows 0 packets sent. I tried reinstalling the NIC
drivers, rebuilt the machine with windows 2000 pro, with the newest
driver, swapped cables. Has anyone ran accross this same problem? I
think the PCI slots have all gone to hell because I tried all of them.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bad NIC device: I don't know if yours is a card or on the
motherboard. If its a card try replacing it.

What kind of internet connection are you using dial-up modem, dsl, cable, etc.
