Martin,
Pentium or Pentium MMX computers were built with the earliest USB 1.0 ports
(maybe USB 1.1), and USB has always been problematic on these machines. Look
in the motherboard BIOS setup for a setting to toggle to enable USB.
It is likely that some newer USB 2.0 devices are simply incompatible with the
USB 1.0 hardware interface. The industry has always struggled to maintain
backward compatibility with newer hardware interfaces, for example PCI and
IDE/ATAPI.
For the on-board graphics, find the graphics chip on the motherboard, determine
its brand and model, then go from there. Many older HP Vectras and other
computers with built in graphics used S3 graphics chips, others Cirrus Logic.
If the former, there is still some hope that you can find drivers for a modern
operating system. If the latter and you are trying to run Windows 2000 or
later, forget it. Cirrus Logic has been out of the graphics chip business for
several years, since before the release of Win 2000. S3 has survived a little
longer through acquisition after acquisition, altho no longer as an active
producer of graphics silicon... Ben Myers
