Not Refurbished Enough

I got a refurbished Vostro 1400 that didn't
work out of the box today.

It hung before getting to the welcome screen
that would give the service code and express
service code; force powering it down (long
power button push) and it came up okay after
that screen, went through setup okay; after
XP was up it lost the mouse pointer and hung
in a couple minutes.

Reboot, came up okay, then lost the mouse
pointer in a couple minutes.

Send this sucker back, I decided. Why mess with
a new loser when you have old ones.

Nice laptop otherwise.

Sorry to hear this. I would have wanted to check it out more (device
manager, device drivers, etc.. ) before sending it back but I'm just
stubborn I guess. Heck, I might even put on a new OS if necessary.

But I like your Subject Line "Not Refurbished Enough" as that seems to
describe it well <grin>. Are you going to go with another laptop or
just forget about it??

You did the right thing by sending it back. I believe the outlet has been
moved. I have my concerns.

Good luck with the next one. The V1400 is a really nice system.

Vostro 1400 packed up ready to go back. Except Dell hasn't
responded yet to the request to return email.

The outlet's been moved - how would that affect the quality of systems
being sold from the outlet?

In theory, it shouldn't.

Well after 2 days they haven't responded to my
email on their own form to return it.

Called returns number.

Phone hell.

Got person I couldn't understand.

After ten repeats of everything (don't these
people use consonants?) she wants me to contact
technical support. Now in second phone hell.

developing.

Not so bad, Tech person accepted my judgment that remote
diagnosis wasn't likely to help, transferred me to a
returns lady (another phone tree), we agreed on a replacement;
they send a replacement, I put the old one in that box,
call UPS and it goes back.

Sounds like it will work.

I had anticipated having to pay return shipping but
hopefully not, if they have one of those prepaid labels.
